It is extremely frustrating not getting a steady and reliable internet connection. (I should not compare to the quality of internet in Hong Kong... )<div><br /></div><div>Anyway, I was trying to setup sky broadband in an old house.... old cables... hence, only can rely on telephone line. </div><div><br /></div><div>Was so happy getting start with the sky hub unfortunately, signal was so poor on second floor.... complaints </div><div><br /></div><div>After research, found a lot of posting on forums and youtube about how good it is replacing the sky hub with Asus modem router DSL ax-82u. So spent hundred pounds to buy one to try before buying a new one during amazon sales... </div><div><br /></div><div>Per some users, it works out of the box. BUT. steps are: (this is only for broadband as we are not using landline phone, so we decide to replace the hub with an expensive DSL modem router...)</div><div><br /></div><div>1. turn off your sky hub</div><div>2. connect DSL ax82u with your laptop using a network cable (just use any LAN port on the modem router). switch off wifi on your laptop so to ensure you are only connect to the DSL ax82u modem router. </div><div>3. switch on the DSL ax82u, open a web browser on your laptop, type 192.168.1.1 to access the admin page. when you first login, you will need to use the admin login details printed on the label of the modem router. </div><div>4. then you may be presented with a black page with 2 options - "create new network" or "advance settings". select "create new network"</div><div>5. then follow whatever asked you to do until you arrive a page to ask you to plug in the DSL line (which is connected to openreach on the wall, using the DSL cable that comes with the sky hub)</div><div>6. wait wait when it is successful, it will ask you to select country and then which service provider you are using</div><div>7. wait wait when it is successful, you will be directed to the advance setting admin page. under WAN, the WAN type auto selected DSL with VDSL. There are other fields which will be auto filled if the connections is successful. (Well done and thanks sky !!) Just click apply or save.</div><div> </div><div>Once all these are done, you can open another browser tab and test browsing a few websites. </div><div><br /></div><div>Congratulations, you alternative broadband is up and running!</div><div><br /></div><div>Screenshots sharing (ignored the IP address... Happy!<br /><br />Now getting more technical. I am not technical technical person. Just above average techie digital marketer.... <br /><br /><b>Goal: setup vpn client (surfshark) in this router.<br />VPN location: Hong Kong<br /></b><br />WL-R100 OpenVPN setup page is a Tomato router firmware. So the setup should follow the Tomato router settings on Surfshark.<br /><br />Step 1: you need to pay the service <a href="https://surfshark.club/friend/Z4JTGfbx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here is the referral link</a><br />Step 2: Get the VPN login setup required details. Login to your Surfshark account and go to VPN - Manual Setup - Router. Select OpenVPN. Step 3: Open a notepad in Windows or texteditor in Mac. Copy and paste on texteditor the Username and Password under Credentials tab. <br />Step 4: Then, on the Location tab, select the location where you want to be shown, in my case Hong Kong. Click the down arrow to copy the server address and server IP on to the texteditor. <br />Step 5: Download the CA and TLS certificates zip file. Unzip it and open the files using any code editor. In Mac, I used sublime text. As you will need to copy and paste the code on the Key tab later.<br /><br />Now all things are ready.<br /><br />Login to the 4G router. You know the IP. Left my industrial grade 3G/4G router in Hong Kong. I started looking for small and similar alternative. When I did research, I found WLINK WL-R100 low cost solutions (as stated in verious articles). I therefore got one from my friend. <br><br>After sorting out the power supply cable, I bought 2 sims - Voxi and Giffgaf to test run it.<br><br>On the Status page, it showed promising results - Connected with different ip addresses from the sim service provider. However, I was stuck for a few days trying to find solutions of "why cannot visit any website...no internet.... ummmmm". I was using RJ45 network cable to connect the 4G router with my macbook.<br><br>Researching. Researching. I upgraded the device firmware. I restored default configuration. I checked Routing-Misc DHCP routes. Let it reboot a few times. Still not able to get out to the internet world....<br><br>I then check network setting again on my macbook. Under the Ethernet Adapter (my RJ45 connection), configure ipv4 was setup as manually. Idiot potatome! I changed it to Using DHCP in Advanced's TCP/IP and ensured the section/page when select the Ethernet Adapter is also set to Using DHCP.<br><br>Tested ping in Terminal. Yeah!! Happy! Successfully swimming out to the internet world! Thank you Wlink and their support!!<br><br>Using giffgaff now. Will swap the sim to Voxi and try again. Next few days my plan will be testing setup VPN client after Voxi sim testing. Hope it will not be too difficult. If successful, I will add a wifi router for everyone to use when need VPN. </td></tr><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td>

It is new with 2 HDMI ports. Great. It is a famous household Japanese brand for many years- Hitachi. Their air conditioners are probably the best and most durable. So I give it a try ....<div><br /></div><div>However, when reading text heavy content or typing documents.... text fuzzy and eyes will get very tired very quickly. </div><div><br /></div><div>I cannot stand the brightness of the TV monitor too... </div><div><br /></div><div>Googled a lot of "solutions" actually not useful... </div><div><br /></div><div>As the Hitachi 24HE2000U highest resolutions only 720p... so basically cannot get it as comfy to read as in a macbook .... </div><div><br /></div><div>My solutions:</div><div><br /></div><div>Used a mini display port to HDMI cable to connect</div><div>System preference - Display - Scaled 1600 x 900</div><div>Wear my glasses </div><div>Zoom view to 110% to 125%</div><div><br /></div><div>And also, I did not see Underscan under mac Display (which was showing up when connected to another big JVC TV), in order to get the top menu showing up and the dock at the bottom showing nicely. You will need to adjust the TV settings. Press Home button on the remote, go to Settings - Pictures - Advanced Settings - Picture Zoom, change it to FULL. Restart your Mac Mini and switch off your smart TV and switch on the TV and Mac Mini again. Then the screen should now showing the top menu bar and dock fully. </div><div><br /></div><div>So far I am ok. As it somehow forces me to zoom documents and websites bigger and keep my reading distance further, I think it is better for my eyes. </div><div><br /></div><div>Hope this is useful to some of you. </div><div><br /></div><div>UPDATES: I turned on the TV monitor first. Leave the HDMI off from the mac mini only connected to the TV monitor. Then turned on the mac mini, after 1-2 mins, then I plugged in the hdmi cable to the mac mini. Interestingly, the text was less fuzzy. Strange... but it reduced text fuzzy-ness. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8044306.post-75046344194124545042022-02-11T15:53:00.004+08:002023-02-14T18:41:32.019+08:00How to install Mojave version macOS in new partition<table><tbody><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td>My MacBook Pro broke. Hence, I bought a 2nd hand Mac mini to try, since I always want a Mac mini.... glad to get a 2014 Mac mini with Apple trackpad v2 (always want to try this too, like it) and a magic keyboard. <br /><br />It has the latest MacOS installed BUT I cannot install my old software ...... ummmm. Ideally, I should remove the SSD from my MacBook and buy a PCIe HD case and just boot from that but the quickest may be to install an older version macOS in new partition. <br /><br />So I decided to create another partition and install older version of macOS....<br /><br />Steps:<br />A. Create new partition <br />In MacBook, it is easy to create new partition. Go to Utilities folder under Applications (use Finder winder) and inside Utilities, there is Disk Utility. <br /><br />Click Partition icon (you will see a pie chart thing that show your total disk space, if you never create any partition before...)<br /><br />Click the + button under the pie. It will automatically cut the pie in half.... On the right hand side, you should see empty field where you can enter new partition name and enter the no of G for your partition under the name field. Make sure not to enter more that what has been used by whatever you are using. <br />It is also wasting time to create a small partition for macOS.... <br /><br />Then Apply and create the Partition. <br /><br />B. Download Mojave Installer <br /><br />Use Safari web browser. Go to here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-mojave/id1398502828?mt=12<br />Click View in App Store and Get<br />Then software updates will pop-up. Click Advance to uncheck Check Updates. Enter Admin password.<br />Just let it download and DO NOT continue... Just let the installer downloaded<br />If it is successful, you can find the Install macOS Mojave in Application folder.<br /><br />Note: If something went wrong that you have to remove the Installer and redownload it, you have to go to Finder window, Applications folder and right click the Installer to open up submenu and Move it to bin/trash. Then empty it before you try going into the link again and get it. <br /><br />C. Get USB drive at least 16G <br /><br />Plug the USB drive into your mac mini. <br />Open Disk Utility and format it into macOS Extended (journaled) format first.<br />Open "Terminal"<br />Type in this command (Mojboot is the name of your USB drive, which you can set in disk utility or drag the usb drive to Terminal, it will show you the correct path and name):<br /><br /><pre class="comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html" id="mntl-sc-block_1-0-44" style="background: rgb(63, 63, 63); box-sizing: border-box; color: white; counter-reset: section 0; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: 0.2px; margin-left: 1.5rem; overflow-x: auto; padding: 13px 20px; white-space: pre-wrap;">sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Mojboot</pre>Enter admin password when prompt and enter Yes to permit access to removable drive and erase the removable disk if it prompts.<br /><br />Then, you shall see it start erase the usb disk and copy files that needed for booting the mac mini..<br /><br />After successfully completed, you will see its volume name is now called Install macOS Mojave...<br /><br />I encountered a few hurdles:<br />1. cannot find the Mojave.app - what i did was to rename it into e.g. moj and tried the above command again replace Mojave.app to moj.app and it worked great<br />2. used a command that has the --applicationpath which caused error, so I just use the command above to create the bootable macos mojave usb drive.<br /><br />Now, you have the bootable disk which allows you to install Mojave macOS on the new partition on your mac mini!<br /><br />Next, I shut down my mac mini and remove the boot usb. Get my formally bluetooth paired keyboard and trackpad ready. And then get a cup of tea. Put the boot usb to the mac mini and switch it on while holding the ALT/Option key down .... wait wait wait until it show 2 icons one is the mac HD and the other is your Install macOS Mojave drive. <br /><br />Select "Install macOS Mojave" - at this stage I had issue of cannot use the trackpad only the keyboard.... SO AVOID USING BLUETOOTH MOUSE USE A WIRED MOUSE. To resolve this issue... I shut the mac mini down and plug the lightning cable to the trackpad v2 and restart the machine. Yeah!<br /><br />Continue..... <br /><br />Select Install macOS Mojave and select your wi-fi network and enter the password....<br /><br />Then, a list of actions/utilities you can do. Select Install macOS and when ask where to install REMEMBER to select the new partition you have created earlier. <br /><br />It took some time to install so grab a cup of tea, some snacks, enjoy the wait. <br /><br />After all is done. Remove the bootable USB. And switch on the the mac, hold down the ALT/Option key again and select to go into the new partition! <br /><br />My practice will go to the System Preference and Startup Disk and select my new partition with Mojave installed as startup, so next time I do not need to hold down Option key again.... only when I want to go into other macOS....<br /><br />Enjoy <br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
